OPPORTUNITY: Exhibition Attendants

Aotearoa Digital Arts Network are seeking experienced and engaged exhibition attendants to support access to the pop-up artwork – The Closed World by Julian Oliver, 23 May – 1 June in Wellington. This work coincides with the 2024 ADA Symposium Rising Algorithms: Navigate, Automate, Dream.

Using technology embedded in a modified telescope, The Closed World presents a convincing yet entirely fabricated cosmos, created using machine learning techniques. Pivoting on a tripod, the telescope can be moved so as to scan the machine-generated cosmos as though it were the real cosmos above. 

The attendants will need to be available 5pm-10pm Thursday to Saturday 23-25 May and 30 May – 1 June. They will also need to be available for a one-hour training session on Thursday 23 May. 

Location One
3 May, Dominion Observatory Garden Battery, Wellington Botanic Gardens, Kelburn 

Location Two
24 May – 1 June, Vogelmorn Green, 93 Mornington Road, Brooklyn

For safety after dark, two attendants will be contracted to be on-site each night. Attendants will need to be able to transport themselves to and from the artwork. 

Duties
– Set up and deinstall the artwork each night
– Set up the site access
– Demonstrate to visitors how to access the artwork
– Discuss the themes and concepts of the artwork with visitors

Qualifications
– Educated to degree level in an arts-related subject, or equivalent experience (Current students welcome)
– Knowledge, experience & interestsKnowledge about the arts, in particular an in-depth knowledge of contemporary digital arts practices
– A general understanding of one or more of the fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence, astronomy, or climate change

General competencies
– An ability to talk about contemporary art accessibly and with conviction
– Able to talk to a wide range of people, and handle visitor complaints with ease and authority
– Comfort with operating technology-based artworks and undertaking basic troubleshooting under the guidance of the artist
– Comfortable working outdoors after dark
– Reliable, punctual and well-presented

Terms of contract
Attendants will be taken on as independent contractors, responsible for their own tax, ACC and kiwisaver. To reflect that the rate of pay is $34.65 per hour. (This is a $30 per hour rate with additional loading to support the contractors holiday pay, kiwi saver and ACC levies.)
